Mayotte

Mayotte is an overseas department and region of France located in the Indian Ocean, between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique. It consists of the main island of Grande Terre, which is approximately 374 square kilometers in size, and several smaller islands. The capital of Mayotte is Mamoudzou. The territory has a diverse culture influenced by African, Arab, and French traditions, reflecting its history and geographic location. Mayotte is known for its rich marine biodiversity and has been designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In terms of governance, it became a department of France in 2011, and it uses the Euro as its currency. The official language is French, but Shimaore and Bamana, which are local languages, are also widely spoken.
